Today, many Canadian websites are blacked out as part of the blackoutspeakout.ca campaign, protesting Bill C-38. An “omnibus” bill (read: 452 page mish-mash of Conservative Party wish fulfillments), it is particularly odious for its attack on the environment.
backofthebook.ca isn’t blacked out because, frankly, we prefer to continue reporting on the Harper government’s myriad misdaventures and malfeasances. (See, for example, John Klein’s latest on the robocall scandal.) However, to show our sympathy for the blackoutspeakout campaign, and our disdain for the anti-democratic nature of Bill C-38 (and the MPs who will ram it through), we have blacked out images on the top page of our site as well as new stories posted today, and replaced our ads with click-throughs to the blackoutspeakout website.
