A new ad released by the Vancouver Humane Society compares calf-roping at the Calgary Stampede to abusing a baby.
The ad, published in a Calgary newspaper, shows a surprised looking infant next to a calf with the caption “Just 3 months old — Would you abuse a baby to entertain a crowd?”
The animal rights group says that calf-roping is the “most inhumane” event at the Calgary Stampede. The calves used in the event are between the ages of three to four months old.
Meanwhile, telecommunications company Bell Canada has decided not to sponsor any rodeo events at the Stampede this year. A 2011 letter-writing campaign launched by the Vancouver Humane Society urged the public to demand that Bell withdraw its sponsorship. More than 1,200 people did so.
However, Bell will still sponsor live entertainment on the Stampede grounds.
