Will Entrekin, 'I' was wondering if 'anyone else' was bothered by those 'single' quotation marks. They 'sure' bugged 'the' heck outta me.

Yep, really Rachel. In fact, if you go to page 32 of LB's review you'll see it copy/pasted word for word.

Sams did not just attack LB, however, she also attacked reviewer PBB (who's Amazon ID she mistypes as BBB in her blog). She has only 2 comments of crazy in PBB's review - and they are hidden unless you chose to show them - but they are there.

I must admit I couldn't help but get on Sams myself. She just reminds me so much of the rich whiny girls I went to high school with. Unable to accept that daddy can't buy them a good review.

Really? Because she was SO ADAMANT that her friends were trying to flock to her side, but that she was holding them back for their own good.

What's even more entertaining is that Sams tried to enlist her friends on facebook to come over and fight as well- to vote the positive reviews up and (she didn't say this out loud, but the implications are obvious) vote the negative reviews down.

"As Sams herself admits, once authors sell their work they ‘leave themselves open for attack.’"

Which I think highlights her 'entirely' inappropriate use 'of' quotation marks in her responses. Because seriously, 'does' she not understand how to use them?

Relatedly, though, it's worthwhile to realize it's not just publication = leaving yourself open for attack; the old metaphor of loosing a book into the wild is good in that there must come a point where the book is the book to stand on its own. Once authors publish, the story belongs, in ways, to everyone who reads it (which is hard to accept, for a writer, at least in that each person tends to read the story he or she wants, and whether it is the one intended is often quite beside the point).

Then again, sometimes it's canny. Who's heard of Sams before this week? This is a whole lot of publicity for a book.
